Production planners work in complex, dynamic and volatile environments. Due to the scale of data processing and optimization problems in production facilities, various kinds of software systems have been developed to alleviate some of the computational load and provide relevant information as well as decision support in a timely manner to production planners.
However, current designs of PPC systems have little consideration for the occurrence of cognitive biases in human-machine interactions. Since the design of information dashboards alone can be sufficient to influence human decision-making, further considerations are required to design human-centric PPC systems.
In order to achieve such human-centric design, the information and decision flows both between the planer and PPC system as well as between PPC system and production facility need to be considered. In this research project, our first emphasis was on handling disruptions as well as supply and demand fluctuations which require timely and well informed decision-making. As such, we started by investigated interactions between planners and PPC systems in such scenarios to derive first insights as basis for later simulation scenarios, available in Interactions between planners’ and PPC systems: Derivation of simulation scenarios with consideration of cognitive bias and disruptions [1].
